Rival Boys at Supermarket (October 5, 2011)

This post is a little late coming, but better late than never! Almost a month ago I had a great weekend of music in Toronto catching Yuck’s show at the Horseshoe on Sunday evening, and tUnE-yArDs the night after at Lee’s Palace. Continue reading

Kidstreet at Starlight (September 29, 2011)

Waterloo keyboard rockers Kidstreet have a new record out Fuh Yeah, and I was along to celebrate its release at their hometown album launch at Starlight. Openers Pick A Piper, of “the drummer from Caribou” fame, blasted the night off with … Continue reading

Sea To Sky at Maxwell’s Music House (September 21, 2011)

Last week I caught a friends band, Sea To Sky, play at local Waterloo music venue Maxwell’s Music House. They released their first EP Head earlier in the year which you can check out here, and apparently there is a second … Continue reading

Bruce Peninsula at Grist Mill (September 18, 2011)

The Grist Mill is one of the more unique venues in Waterloo. With a maximum capacity of not much more than 50 people, and no lighting or equipment other than what you bring yourself, in the right hands it makes for an extremely intimite venue. Last sunday it was dressed up with all manner of fairy lights, streamers, bells and candles to celebrate the releases of Bruce Peninsula’s new record Open Flames. Continue reading

Graveyard Train at the Horseshoe Tavern (July 25, 2011)

This is a late post and times have been busy, but as Melbourne country-horror six piece Graveyard say soon all will be gone… But before we all die, as Graveyard Train so enthusiastically informed the crowd gathered at The Horseshoe … Continue reading

Paul Reginato at Maxwell’s Music House (July 10, 2011)

Every summer Maxwell’s Music House in Waterloo runs a singer/songwriter competition, and in the last heat a friend of mine, Paul Reginato, played. Paul is a young singer/pianist whose intricate songs and narrative lyrics gives me Sufjan Stevens vibes. Apparently I’m … Continue reading

The Antlers at The Mod Club (June 14, 2011)

I got into The Antlers unfashionable late. I didn’t check out Hospice until mid 2010 when Last.fm recommended them as similar to The National, a band who were rapidly become my new favourite at the time. To be honest I don’t think those two bands sound similar at all, the only commonalities I can find are that they both hail from Brooklyn and they are both incredible on record, and even better live. Continue reading

Okkervil River at the Phoenix Concert Theatre (June 10, 2011)

Friday night was an eclectic one at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. Taking the headline were Austin indie-folk juggernaut Okkervil River and along for the ride were New Jersey punk rockers Titus Andronicus and Baltimore new-wave trio Future Islands. Continue reading

Knock Knock Ginger at Starlight Lounge (June 9, 2011)

Last Thursday was the long awaited CD release for Waterloo indie-pop locals Knock Knock Ginger’s latest album We’re Headed For A Fall. I feel a little strange writing a review for bands where I know some of the members, so … Continue reading

Yeasayer at the Phoenix Concert Theater (June 7, 2011)

Last Tuesday I had the privilege of seeing Yeasayer at the Phoenix Concert Theater, and it was a hell of a good show. If I had to sum the night up in one word though that word would would be “hush”. And I would say it twice because opening act, the bearded-lunatic-pervert Hush Hush, stole the show with his crazy dance moves and over-sexed lyrics. Continue reading
